Rude Students, Fearful Administrators

To the Editor:

It's not just a matter of faculty members' setting and enforcing norms of student behavior; it's also a matter of administrators' being willing to support faculty members in such endeavors ("Remedial Civility Training," Careers, May 11). I teach at a community college in upstate New York, where, needless to say, I encounter a much greater lack of college socialization than Thomas H. Benton does.

Perhaps I'm opting out (or perhaps I'm simply desperate), but I tell
