Vanderbilt University wanted to draw more attention to its homecoming program this year, so it increased the budget twentyfold, to $100,000, and added a parade, a spirit contest, and a blood drive.
But the biggest attention-getter of all cost the university nothing but grief, as students angrily protested what they say was Vanderbilt's failure to include minority women in its homecoming court, from which students elect the homecoming king and queen.
