Background: Coddington leads a team of visual journalists who create and produce multimedia and design for the online and print editions of The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle Review.
Before joining the staff in 2010, he served as art director of USA Today, where he led a team of designers, developers, producers, illustrators and informational graphics specialists in the creation of breaking news and advance projects for print and online, including InfoMotion, a feature that delivers animated informational graphics in a video format. He joined USA Today in 2000 as a senior designer and trained the online staff in the use of Flash.
Coddington spent eight years at Knight Ridder/Tribune Information Services (1992-2000) as a senior illustrator and art director. In 1993, he founded and served as primary illustrator for Faces in the News, a caricature service syndicated by Tribune Media Services. The following year, he was part of the startup of KRT Europe, which provided print graphics to more than 500 international clients. In 1996, he became one of three founding members of KRT Interactive, a service providing daily packages of online content to subscribers.
He began his career as a staff artist in 1986 with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Three years later, he became assistant art director of the San Jose Mercury News. He was part of the staff awarded the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for general news reporting of the Bay Area earthquake and its aftermath.
Coddington has appeared as a speaker at the Poynter Institute, the Society for News Design, the Online News Association, and other venues. He has participated as a judge for the Society of News Design and other competitions.
In 2009, Innovative Interactivity named Coddington one of 100 notable multimedia professionals. Coddington received a bachelor of fine arts with a concentration in illustration from the University of Georgia in 1985.
