Police officers arrested a Rochester Institute of Technology student on Tuesday after finding two assault rifles in his room at the RIT Inn and Conference Center, the Associated Press reported. An employee of the inn alerted the police, an RIT spokesman said.
The student, Jonathan Hackenburg, told authorities that he was a gun collector and that he had licenses for the weapons in New Jersey, his home state. But the police said that “crossing the state line and possessing them in New York State is a violation of the law.” Mr. Hackenburg was arraigned on weapons-possession charges and jailed, and bail was set at $15,000 if paid in cash or $30,000 if in bonds. He was also suspended from RIT.
