Revised Paper From State-College Groups Proposes New Accountability System

Two state-college associations have released a revised version of a paper calling for a voluntary accountability system that would allow prospective students, their parents, and policy makers to compare similar institutions.

The revised paper was written by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, but it is not yet online. The paper proposes a “Voluntary System of Accountability” under which participating colleges could choose from among four measures of learning outcomes: the Collegiate Learning Assessment, the Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress, the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency, and the Graduate Record Examinations.

Earlier versions of the paper had suggested the selection of a single learning-outcomes measure that would be used at all participating universities (The Chronicle, April 7 and July 11).
