Return of the Native
When Víctor Montejo, a respected anthropologist and writer, became the first Mayan Indian to head Guatemala's Peace Secretariat, he knew there were many who wanted to see him fail -- including some of his own people.
"The hardest part is my relationship with indigenous leaders; they are very jealous," he says, relaxing on a plush leather couch in his otherwise shabby office in downtown Guatemala City. "They see me as a threat."
