Responsibility for Computer Security

To the Editor:

In response to the article titled "Any Computer Can Be a Launching Pad for Hackers, Security Expert Warns," by Florence Olsen (January 21), let me summarize my thoughts, as a college professor who in a previous incarnation attempted to be a campus information-technology administrator.

Users pay thousands of dollars (including annual maintenance fees) to software companies that claim that the operating systems and applications they sell
