Researchers Score Modest Win Over Animal-Rights Activists, at Least for Now
Lobbyists for universities notched a modest win in their continuing fight with animal-rights activists last week, by persuading Congress to temporarily block the U.S. Department of Agriculture from widening the Animal Welfare Act to include birds and rodents.
Lawmakers in the Senate and in the House of Representatives added language to the department's appropriations bill for the 2002 fiscal year that bars the agency from using the funds to protect birds and rodents. Research advocates
