Research on the Effects of Violence in Films
To the Editor:
Stephen Prince rightly indicts film scholars for their silence in society's debate on the effects of media violence ("Why Do Film Scholars Ignore Movie Violence?," The Review, August 10). However, part of the reason for this silence is that Congress exhibits the same distrust for the humanities that Prince shows.
Members of Congress and Prince both place exalted trust in "findings," the results of quantitative research, with little scrutiny of the research
