Stanford University announced today that it would lead a $2.6-million research project to study how California can improve the way it governs and finances its public elementary and secondary schools, and how it should act to raise student achievement. The project, which will include more than 20 separate studies, has been designed to respond to requests by state officials for guidance on how policy makers and others can help California reposition itself as a leader on education outcomes. Money for the studies will come from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the James Irvine Foundation, and the Stuart Foundation. Details of the project are available on the Hewlett Foundation’s Web site.
