Like many of the young people it studies, the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement has just packed up and moved from one college to another.
The nonpartisan center, which studies the political and civic behavior of Americans in the 15-to-25 age bracket, said this week that it has moved from the University of Maryland at College Park to Tufts University’s main campus in Medford, Mass., near Boston.
Commonly known as CIRCLE, the center had operated out of Maryland’s School of Public Policy since its founding in 2001. At Tufts, it will be housed in the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service. In a statement announcing the relocation, Peter Levine, the center’s director, called the move an “exciting and natural” one for his organization.
As a new research arm of Tisch College, the center plans to expand the scope of its scholarship, its leaders say. Among the new subjects it plans to study are the political behavior of young people who do not go to college and how life changes between the ages of 20 and 30 affect civic and political engagement.
The center gets much of its financing from philanthropies such as the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Carnegie Corporation of New York. It has a five-member staff and relies heavily on the work of undergraduate student assistants.
