Report Urges Colleges to Offer 'Integrative' Programs to Students

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Association of Colleges and Universities have released a report, “Integrative Learning: Opportunities to Connect,” that describes how 10 institutions have teamed up to counter what one of the report’s authors describes as the “fragmented landscape” of college curricula and instead to encourage students to “put the pieces together” from all of their studies in order to “develop habits of mind” that will guide them henceforth in their personal and professional lives.

The authors of the report say that some colleges already offer such “integrative” approaches, but only for certain students — seniors in “capstone” programs, for example. The goal should be for colleges to provide such opportunities to all of their students, the report says.
