Colleges should focus on enabling minority students to achieve academically on the campus and to graduate, not just on admitting them in the first place, according to a report released today by the Teagle Foundation.
The report, “Eliminating Racial Disparities in College Completion and Achievement: Current Initiatives, New Ideas, and Assessment,” was written by a team of Cornell University researchers. They examined diversity programs at colleges that are helping minority students match their nonminority peers in academic achievement and graduation rates.
The report singled out as promising diversity programs at Bates, Colby, and Hamilton Colleges; Colgate, Columbia, and Cornell Universities; the State University of New York at Geneseo; and the University of Southern California. Many of the programs focus on the campus climate and encourage interaction among different groups of students.
