Renovations made to dormitories that house more than 6,000 students at the University of Connecticut at Storrs have never been inspected by a building official, according to The Hartford Courant.
The renovations were part of UConn 2000, a 20-year, $2.3-billion construction program that has run into inspection problems before, prompting Gov. M. Jodi Rell to demand assurances that any building where students live or study is safe.
In the renovations, involving 60 buildings in nine dormitory complexes, each building got fire-safety improvements, and some got more extensive upgrades, like new windows and roofs, the Courant said. University officials told the newspaper that each building had been inspected by a fire marshal, but not by a building inspector. They also said they interpreted the governor’s order to apply only to newly constructed dorms, not renovated facilities. —Charles Huckabee
