Religious Freedom on Campus Is Defended on Capitol Hill

Today is Religious Freedom Day – on Capitol Hill, at least. The event, sponsored by Sen. Rick Santorum, a Pennsylvania Republican who is running for re-election, kicked off this morning with a discussion of religious freedom in the United States. Among the speakers was Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, known as FIRE.

He highlighted some of the cases FIRE has recently taken on, such as a ban (now rescinded) at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire on Bible studies led by resident assistants. It was yet another example, according to Mr. Lukianoff, of “laughably unconstitutional” policies at some colleges. He also criticized colleges that decline to give funds to religious-student groups that discriminate against nonbelievers. “The biggest trend of all is the denial of the right to free association,” he said.
