Regional Public Colleges Struggle to Tap Corporations and Foundations
The University of Wisconsin at Madison hit the jackpot last year when it received a $296-million donation from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wisconsin.
The gift was the result of the insurance company's conversion from nonprofit to for-profit status. When it made the switch, the state required it to distribute a percentage of its holdings to charities. Half the money went to the medical programs on the Madison campus, and the other half to the Medical College of Wisconsin.
