Reading, Writing, 'Rithmetic, and Russian?
To the Editor:
There is much to applaud in your opinion pieces on "The Foreign-Language Challenge" (The Chronicle Review, March 24). Interestingly, however, the piece that rose to the level of genuine wisdom was the brief one by Amanda Rivkin, a Sarah Lawrence College undergraduate, who alone among the protagonists in today's debate seems to have a sense of history ("There'll Always Be an Eastern Europe").
I understand the necessity of focusing on K-12 education, and I agree
