'Racializing' Jewish Identity

Much in Jonathan Freedman's profile of Emanuel Haldeman-Julius is extremely interesting ("Jews and the Making of Middlebrow American Culture," Opinion, September 18). Jews' role in spreading "middlebrow culture" in the United States earlier in this century is surely a topic worthy of study, and Freedman gives many insights and new perspectives on neglected figures such as this pioneering
