Racial Profiling Was Not Factor in Campus Scuffle, Report Says

An African-American professor at San Francisco State University was not the subject of racial profiling in an incident last fall that led to a scuffle with campus police officers and his arrest, according to an investigation whose results were released this week, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

The faculty member, Antwi Akom, an assistant professor of ethnic studies, was accosted by the police officers, two of whom are also black, after he was found in a locked campus building after 11 p.m. (The Chronicle, November 2, 2005). The investigation, which was commissioned by San Francisco State, was conducted by two prominent local political figures: Willie L. Brown Jr., a former mayor, and Louise H. Renne, a former city attorney.

Their report said that Mr. Akom acted in a “physically and verbally intimidating manner” during the incident. Mr. Akom declined to cooperate with the investigation out of concern that it would prejudice his criminal trial, which is scheduled to begin in April. But he has previously disputed the police’s version of events.
