It’s notoriously difficult to handicap the Kentucky Derby, but it’s become depressingly likely that the victorious jockey will not be of African-American descent. A year after Kevin Krigger, aboard the California champ Goldencents, attempted to become the first black jockey in more than a century to capture the country’s most captivating race, not a single contender for the 140th edition of the Derby had a black rider.
