R.I. Lawmakers Strip Board's Authority

Rhode Island's General Assembly has voted to strip the state's Board of Governors for Higher Education of its authority to allocate funds among the state's three public colleges.

A budget bill overwhelmingly passed by the legislature last month calls for state lawmakers to assume control over the budgets of the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and the Community College of Rhode Island, as well as of the state's central higher-education office.
