Mr. Beard, who turns 66 this month, worked at Bucknell University for 35 years, rising to become a professor of linguistics and Russian, and later director of the linguistics department, before retiring in 2000.
Current activities
Mr. Beard and a former student have founded yourDictionary.com, a Web site and language-services company that creates customized dictionaries for publishers; develops names for new products
