The former second-string punter for the University of Northern Colorado’s football team was charged with attempted first-degree murder on Thursday in connection with the stabbing of the starting punter, whom he sought to sideline by injuring him severely, authorities said. According to the Associated Press, the accused student, Mitchell Cozad, could face up to 48 years in prison if he is convicted of that charge as well as a count of second-degree assault.
The injured player, Rafael Mendoza, was treated and released from the hospital, and subsequently returned to the football field, the AP reported.
Mr. Cozad, who has been suspended from the team and the university, had been out on bail. A warrant was issued for his arrest on Thursday.
