Boston College is taking flak from both left and right over its decision to invite Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state, to speak at its commencement and receive an honorary degree. Last week two theology professors at the Roman Catholic college said Ms. Rice’s role in the Iraq War and in other foreign-policy matters makes her morally unfit for the honor (The Chronicle, May 4). Hundreds of students subsequently joined the protest (The Chronicle, May 4).
Comes now the Cardinal Newman Society, a Catholic group that every year objects to a range of commencement speakers who do not hew to its fiercely conservative line, particularly on the issue of abortion. Last month the society complained about guests at five Catholic colleges’ graduation ceremonies (The Chronicle, April 20). Now the group has added the secretary of state to its list of targets—because Ms. Rice has said she is “mildly pro-choice” and “kind of libertarian” on the question of government regulations on abortion.
