Public Policy's Threat to Private Colleges
To the Editor:
Martin Van Der Werf's story "Recession and Reality Set In at Private Colleges" (March 1) accurately described the challenges that many of us face daily. It did not, however, point out the pivotal role that U.S. public policy has played in creating the precarious circumstances now threatening many independent colleges.
With the tremendous growth in public-sector institutions in the last 50 years has come a public perception that the real cost of higher education
