Protesters Shut Gallaudet Campus

A student-led protest against the choice of a new president for Gallaudet University intensified into a shutdown of the campus last week and raised questions about whether she would be able to take office.

Tensions have simmered since May, when the Board of Trustees announced that it had chosen the provost, Jane K. Fernandes, to succeed the longtime president, I. King Jordan, as of January. A week later, the faculty approved a motion of no confidence in her leadership.
