Andrew H. Card Jr., President Bush’s former chief of staff, was jeered on Friday at the graduate-student commencement ceremony at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he received an honorary doctorate in public service, The Boston Globe reports.
Hundreds of students and faculty members were involved in the three-to-four-minute outburst, which drowned out remarks by Charlena Seymour, the provost, who presented Mr. Card with the degree.
The protesters accused him of lying to Americans about the Iraq War and said he did not deserve an honorary degree. Mr. Card, a former Massachusetts lawmaker, ignored questions afterward about the protest, saying only, “It was a great honor and a privilege to be here.” —Don Troop
