Protest Widens at Boston College Over Honor for Rice

Hundreds of students at Boston College have joined two professors in a protest of the Roman Catholic college’s decision to invite Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to speak at its commencement this month and to confer an honorary degree on her, The Boston Globe reported this morning.

The two professors have asserted in a petition signed by 150 other members of the faculty that Ms. Rice’s role in the Iraq War and her approach to foreign policy were inconsistent with the college’s values (The Chronicle, May 4). The professors’ petition does not challenge the speaking invitation or ask the college to drop the honorary degree, but a new petition signed by hundreds of students makes that very demand. It is unclear if Ms. Rice, a former Stanford University provost, has accepted the invitation.
