Prosecutors Say Ousted Texas Southern U. President May Have Lied to Grand Jury

County prosecutors in Texas suspect that Priscilla D. Slade, the former president of Texas Southern University, lied to a grand jury that indicted her, and on Monday they asked a judge to unseal Ms. Slade’s testimony, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Ms. Slade was fired in June by the university’s governing board for allegedly violating university policies and state laws by misspending university money. A criminal investigation later found that she had spent $1.9-million during her seven-year tenure as president on purchases such as artwork, club memberships, spa treatments, and tickets for sporting events, according to the newspaper.

If convicted of the two criminal counts she faces, Ms. Slade could receive a sentence ranging from probation to life in prison. She could also face a perjury charge if the court determines that Ms. Slade lied to the grand jury. Ms. Slade’s lawyer was quoted in the newspaper as saying that prosecutors’ attempt to unseal the testimony was a “fishing expedition.”
