Proposed Deal on Tobacco Lawsuits May Finance Research on Smoking
The proposed deal between cigarette manufacturers and the dozens of states that are suing them could produce a bit of a windfall for academic researchers -- assuming, that is, that their scholarly interests concern curbing smoking by minors.
Under the proposal, cigarette manufacturers are to put up $25-million a year for the next 10 years to create a charitable educational foundation.
