Proposed Cuts Endanger GEAR UP Program
The two-year-old GEAR UP program may never make it to adolescence.
In August, the Education Department program awarded new grants to only six colleges and two states, which use the money to help entire grades of students at schools in low-income areas prepare for college. The department awarded 80 grants last year, and had advertised that it would distribute roughly the same number this year.
