Professors Strike at Uganda's Makerere U.

Professors and lecturers at Uganda’s Makerere University, one of the most well regarded universities in Africa, went on strike this week, saying that they did not have proper teaching materials and that some salaries and pensions had not been paid in a while, according to The Monitor, a newspaper in Kampala, the country’s capital.

Part-time lecturers have not been paid in nearly a year, according to a Ugandan-news Web site, The New Vision.

The academics also said they lacked basic supplies such as paper and chalk. “We will not teach until the university council provides teaching materials,” Kiggundu Musoke, a spokesman for the lecturers, told The New Vision.

Makerere’s public-relations officer, Gilbert Kadilo, confirmed that a meeting on Thursday between academics and high-level administrators had failed to resolve the dispute. The faculty members walked off their jobs on Wednesday.

The university’s new term opened on February 2, but no classes have been held since then. —Wachira Kigotho
