Professors Sound Discordant Note Over Sale of Musical Instruments

The Claremont Colleges have sold their 1,200-item collection of rare musical instruments that has languished for years for lack of money and has not been displayed since 2006, the Los Angeles Times reported this morning. But the purchase, by organizers of a new Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, is drawing criticism from music faculty members at colleges in Claremont consortium, a group of seven higher-education institutions. The purchase price was not disclosed, but was estimated at less than $1.5-million. —Andrew Mytelka
