More than 100 faculty members left the University of Iowa and Iowa State University in the 2005-6 academic year, a reflection of the institutions’ low pay relative to their peers, according to the Des Moines Register. And with those faculty members went research grants and graduate students. University leaders are hoping to turn things around based on promises of increased state funds for university salaries from the new governor. —Andrew Mytelka
