Professor Studies What Is Left Behind at the Vietnam Memorial

As an intern at the nearby Smithsonian Institution in 1988, Kristin Ann Hass would often stroll along the grassy National Mall here during her lunch hours. Passing by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, she saw the black-marble facade as a screen, reflecting the anger, confusion, grief, loneliness, and tears of visitors who came to commemorate the Vietnam War and those who fought in it.
