Professor Names Seaweed for Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt

When a professor of marine science on the campus of the University of Hawaii here was looking for a name for a newly discovered species of seaweed, she immediately thought of Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt.

The professor, Karla J. McDermid, said she had been impressed by how Mr. Babbitt had pushed a few years ago to turn Midway Island, which is located about 1,500 miles from the campus, into a wildlife refuge.
