A judge’s ruling on the privacy rights of Washington State University students has led the campus police force to discontinue hallway patrols in dormitories, the Associated Press reported this morning. The judge dismissed two criminal cases against students this past spring, ruling that the students had an expectation of privacy in their dorms, just as if the buildings were houses. While prosecutors appeal those rulings, arguing that the hallways at least are public spaces, the university is stopping the patrols.
