The article about criminal-background checks disturbed me ("No Surprises, Please," The Chronicle, July 30). Not because of the checks, but because of the attitude that someone who has committed a felony should not be allowed to teach at a university. What should someone like Eric Krueger do? What kind of job should he be allowed to hold? If we do not let former criminals become productive citizens, they have no choice but to turn to criminal means of support.
