President's Call for a New Provost Is Inadvertently Broadcast on the Internet

Always assume that the microphone is on. Blandina Cardenas, new president of the University of Texas-Pan American, learned that lesson the hard way last month.

Just before a live Internet broadcast of a news conference in Austin to announce Ms. Cardenas's appointment as president, a technician punched a button prematurely, airing about 20 seconds of her comments during an executive session with the University of Texas System's Board of Regents.

"I think we need a new provost,"
