Presidential Spouses: Worth Taking Seriously, and Worth Paying

On a recent afternoon, Deborah J. Cofer answered the telephone while planning menus for football parties and dinners for donors. Her husband, president of the University of Louisiana at Monroe, poked his head out of his home office to see if she wanted to use his desk for the phone call.

The Cofers work as a team. "From the moment we get up to the moment we go to bed, we work for the university," Ms. Cofer says.

Unlike James E. Cofer Sr., though, Ms. Cofer is unpaid.
