The March 9 Chronicle article "Legal Barriers Hamper Scholars' Access to Papers of Recent Presidents" never clearly identified the principal objection that organizations of historians and the Society of American Archivists — the world's largest organization of professional archivists, with 4,800 members in more than 20 nations — have raised against President Bush's executive order that effectively gutted the Presidential Records Act of 1978.
