Presidential Medals to Be Awarded to University Chief and Researcher

The White House has announced that President Bush will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest honor for civilians, to 10 leading figures on Friday, December 15. Among the 10, who are profiled on a White House Web page, are Norman C. Francis, the septagenarian president of Xavier University of Louisiana, who has led the historically black Roman Catholic university back from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina; and Joshua Lederberg, the geneticist and microbiologist who shared a 1958 Nobel Prize and was later president of Rockefeller University.
