John D. Petersen, president of the University of Tennessee system since 2004, will step down on March 1, university officials announced this afternoon. The system is facing severe budget cuts, and Mr. Petersen has clashed at times with other administrators as well as members of the system’s Board of Trustees. His departure follows the January 2008 resignation of Loren W. Crabtree, chancellor of the system’s flagship campus, in Knoxville. We’ll have more details in an article on our Web site tomorrow. —Paul Fain
