President of Texas Tech U. to Step Down
Austin, Tex.
Texas Tech University's president, Jon S. Whitmore, stunned faculty members and students by announcing on Friday that he would resign within a year.
Mr. Whitmore, who has led the institution, in Lubbock, Tex., since 2003, is popular with faculty members but had taken some heat recently after the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools put Tech on probation in December.
The accreditor faulted the university for failing to turn in
