President of Grambling State U. to Step Down This Month

Horace A. Judson will step down as president of Grambling State University, effective October 31, the University of Louisiana system announced today.

Mr. Judson, who has drawn both praise and criticism during his five years as president, cited family reasons in tendering his resignation, and both the system's president and the chairman of its Board of Supervisors stressed that the decision was his own.

The system's statement credited Mr. Judson with overseeing a number of successes at Grambling State, including stabilizing enrollment, raising admissions standards, and creating a Center for Mathematical Achievement in Science and Technology.

He was also at the center of a bitter internal struggle over the future of Grambling State that resulted in a 2006 lawsuit alleging that employees were being mistreated and that the university was being led in the wrong direction. That suit was dismissed in 2007.

More recently, students and faculty members have drafted resolutions of no-confidence in his leadership, The News-Star, a newspaper in Monroe, La., reported, but neither resolution has been brought to a vote.
