President-Elect at Gallaudet U. Fails to Win Faculty Support
Her ordeal reflects a growing debate in the deaf community
The president-designate of the world's only university for the deaf remains under siege, after weeks of protest by students and faculty members, some of whom claim she is not "deaf enough" for the job.
Opponents say that at this critical point in deaf history, Gallaudet University needs a stronger advocate for the deaf than Jane K. Fernandes, the institution's provost, who is scheduled to become president in January.
