President Bush Calls for Increase in Pell Grants

President Bush has announced that he will seek to raise the maximum Pell Grant by $500, to $4,550, over the next five years, and to eliminate a $4.3-billion shortfall that has plagued the student-aid program.

Speaking at Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Mr. Bush made clear that he did not plan to include additional money for those goals in his 2006 budget request. Instead, he said, he would ask Congress to generate savings by making changes in the federal guaranteed
