Preserving Democracy in the United States

To the Editor:

Judith Grant's essay "Uncle Sam Over My Shoulder" (The Review, April 11) is yet another example of inexplicable paranoia in the left-leaning intellectual elite. She reports feeling "a chilling effect" from the fact that our law-enforcement agencies now have some additional capability (under the USA Patriot Act) to root out terrorists and prevent another terrorist attack. I suggest she consider the anxiety that many citizens feel when boarding airplanes and buses,
