Prayer Circles on Virginia Tech's Drillfield Try to Make Sense of Loss

Blacksburg, Va. — Hundreds of students gathered on Wednesday afternoon on the Drillfield at Virginia Tech in prayer circles of five to 30 students each. In the largest circle, a large man rocked back and forth as he prayed aloud. “Lord God, I simply pray that you will be you in the situation,” he said. “Father, we know, Lord God, that you are building character.”

Franklin Graham, the well-known evangelical preacher, appeared after a few minutes and spoke through a bullhorn, offering a short sermon. “God understands loss. He lost his son,” he told the crowd. “People ask how a God that loves us can allow something like this to happen. I don’t have the answers, but I know that God cares.” —John Gravois
