Portfolios Not a Panacea for Graduate Students

Your otherwise valuable article on the increasing use of portfolios ("Portfolios Are Replacing Qualifying Exams as a Step on the Road to Dissertations," The Chronicle, July 11) should be supplemented with a more-critical — in both senses — examination of what is frequently both a result of and a motivation for such changes: the privileging of the specialized work that is associated with the dissertation over a broader education in the early stages
